Gammel Dag Midsummer Celebration Initiative

Overview

Gammel Dag, a cornerstone of Peterson's cultural calendar, celebrates Midsummer and embraces a broader Scandinavian heritage, deeply rooted in the city's unique Norwegian founding. Under the Friends of Peterson, the festival has seen a renaissance, returning to its core traditions while integrating elements like the city parade, which kickstarts the event.

The festival has evolved under various volunteer teams, each bringing fresh perspectives. Now, it not only showcases Scandinavian customs, culture, and cuisine but also offers an array of children's activities, such as a dunk tank, face painting, balloon creations, minnow racing, and wagon rides, making it a truly family-friendly event. The inclusion of Scandinavian artists and the Decorah, IA dance troop, supported by grants from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, adds authenticity and educational value.

Objective

To revive an annual community celebration, uniting all generations in honoring Norwegian heritage through folk arts while providing diverse activities for all ages.
